Jefferson’s Earth Day Fair: April 20, 2011

April 20, 2011

As a continuation of my MPH work, I volunteer with the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Jefferson University and Hospital.  TODAY they will be hosting an Earth Day Fair!  I’ll be hosting a table to talk about the three ways that Jefferson brings local food to the community:

1.  The Jefferson Farmers’ Market—Thursdays at 10th and Chestnut from 11:00 – 3:30
2.  The NEW Certified Organic Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)—With pick up at the Jefferson Farmers’ Market (want details?! email me at
3.  The Atrium—Staff and visitor cafeteria, 2nd floor Gibbon, features Fair Trade/organic coffee, local seasonal produce, organic yogurt and rBGH-free milk.
Here are the details of the event from Jefferson’s website:

This year marks the 41st anniversary of Earth Day. Celebrate it here at Jefferson’s Earth Day Fair for games, prizes, music and giveaways—and key information about what you can do to protect our planet.

Topics at the fair will include how to be more sustainable at work and home, i.e. balanced eating, recycling, energy, water and green products.

There will be more than 28 exhibitors, ranging from Jefferson departments to companies that reprocess medical devices and recycle items to new lighting technology. Plus, entertainment includes a local juggler and singer-songwriters Dylan McGuire and Dani Mari.

Tips on Making a Positive Difference in Our World Right Now

  • Eat food, but not too much. Mostly plants. A non-vegetarian diet requires 2.9 times more water, 13 times more fertilizer and 1.4 times more pesticides than a vegetarian diet. What we choose to eat makes both a health and environmental difference.
  • Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown in the ocean kill as many as 1 million sea creatures a year! Start a new habit today. Use reusable bags as much as possible. (And bring your own beverage in a reusable container to the Earth Day Fair!)

Jefferson’s Earth Day Fair is sponsored by the Jefferson Sustainability Council.

Date and Time:

April 20, 2011
11 am to 1:30 pm
