Jefferson Earth Day Event: Recap

April 25, 2011

The Jefferson Earth Day Event was a hit!  There was information about recycling, waste management (important when you’re talking about hospital waste!), our farmers’ market, a new CSA, live music, a juggler and much more, including a visit from the Eagle’s mascot Swoop.

The Jefferson Department of Nutrition and Dietetics (DND) organized the event.  They also offered information on how they were bringing local food to the cafeteria and patient rooms by utilizing the Common Market Philadelphia.  The Common Market connects institutions with local food sources.  For example, The DND can place a a food order with The Common Market, and the Common Market will supply and deliver the local goods.  The DND also provides a farmers’ market on Thursdays from mid-May to mid-October from Farm to City.  The most recent endeavor by this department is creating a certified organic community supported agriculture (CSA), where individuals and families buy a share upfront from farmers and pick up their goods at the farmers’ market each week.  Interested in the CSA?  Please email me at anna.quinn@jefferson.edu for more info!

Finally, here are a few pictures that capture the Earth Day event!
