What’s in a CSA?

This is my first year participating in a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture.  I, along with my sisters and man-friend, split a full veggie share from Lancaster Farm Fresh, with Jefferson Farmers’ Market as the pick up location.  We paid $147 each to have certified organic produce every week from now until mid  October (21 weeks).  Here is what was in our first CSA box:

Thursday, June 9 – Full Share

  • 1 Bunch White Scallions – Certified Organic – Farmdale Organics
  • 1 Head Green Romaine Lettuce – Certified Organic – Bellview Organics
  • 1 Bunch Garlic Scapes – Certified Organic – Burkholders Organics
  • 1 Bag Pea Tendrils OR 1 Bunch Red Radishes  – Certified Organic – Eastbrook Produce or Friends Road Organics
  • 1 Bunch Red Kale – Certified Organic – Windy Hollow Organics
  • 1 Bag Maché – Certified Organic – Elm Tree Organics
  • 2 Yellow Straightneck Squash – Certified Organic – Echo Valley Organics
  • 1 Package Shiitake Mushrooms – Certified Organic – Mother Earth Organics
  • 1 Bunch Cilantro – Certified Organic – Noble Herb
    The final Full Share item is ONE of the following:

  • 1 Package Portobello Mushroom Caps OR 1 Package White Mushrooms – Certified Organic – Mother Earth Organics

CSA too much for you?  McCann’s set up a four week program that you can buy into – $40 gets you a reusable tote and greater than $10 worth of produce for 4 weeks.  You can find them at 10th and Chestnut from 11-3:30 every Thursday until mid October.
