What’s in YOUR jelly?

Recently my CSA partner did not pick up the fruit share so I got to take home a pint of organic blueberries and a jar of Oak View Acres Organic Strawberry Jam.  The first night I took a taste of the jelly as a sweet ending to my vegetarian dinner.  It was the absolute best jelly on the face of this planet.  I looked at the ingredients and found:

  1. Organic strawberries
  2. Organic agave nectar
  3. Organic lemon juice
  4. Natural fruit lectin
  5. Calcium phosphate
  6. Water
  7. Salt

Looking at the ingredients reminded me of being on a trip to the Poconos with my family over July 4 weekend a few years back.  My dad had made me a PB&J sandwich.  It was on white bread and used Smuckers jelly.  It was so sweet from the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) I got a “jelly belly ache.”  When I checked the label of the jelly and the bread, both contained HFCS. (Why does my bread need to be super sweet?!?)

Have you read the label on your jelly recently?  How many ingredients are there?  Is high fructose corn syrup an ingredient?  I usually stick with Polaner All Fruit jelly because it is affordable and I can find it at Super Fresh.

Give your local strawberry or at least a jelly without the HFCS a try and experience a natural type of sweet.
