Health Education at the Jefferson Farmers Market

June 6, 2012

During my masters program I started a health education table at the Jefferson Farmers Market and I’m happy to report that this year will be its third successive year.   This Thursday will mark the start of this seasons health education events, which will take place at 10th and Chestnut from 11:30 – 1:30.  Besides finding weekly recipes and health information, each week has a theme:

Jefferson Staff at the 2011 Health Education Table

  • Ask The Dietitian every first week of the month.
Jefferson dietitians can answer your questions about nutrition, weight management, BMI, making healthy food choices, and more. Handouts and recipe ideas available.
  • Sun Safety – Answers to burning questions every second weekend of the month.
1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime as a result of too much sun exposure. How do I enjoy the outdoors safely? What SPF should I be using? Come get answers to common questions about sun exposure, sunscreens and sun safety.
  • Blood Pressure Screenings – back at Jeff Market every third week of the month.
High blood pressure affects approximately 1 in 3 adults in the USA, and more than half of Americans with high blood pressure are not in control. Do you know what your BP is? Emergency department employees will be at the market to answer questions to support your health and well being.
  • Safe Summer Tips from our Trauma experts every fourth week of the month.
Find out all about keeping you and your loved ones safe this summer: from water safety to fireworks safety to preventing dog bites. Get all your questions answered.

You can find the Jefferson Farmers Market at 10th and Chestnut from 11-3:30 every Thursday from mid-May to mid-October, and the health education events from 11:30-1:30.
