Preparing Your Pantry

September 18 is national Get Ready Day – that means getting ready, or prepared, for an emergency.  One aspect is having food stocked up and ready to go.  You can find specific guidelines from  the American Public Health Association here.

The three lists below describe what you should have in your pantry 1.) in case of an emergency 2.) for every day cooking and 3.) to spice up every day cooking.

Emergency Pantry

  • Water (check expiration date… for everything!)
  • Canned beans
  • Dried beans, grains and seeds (you can sprout them and eat them!)
  • Fruit juices, instant coffee
  • Dried fruits
  • Canned fish (tuna, sardines, etc)
  • Canned vegetables (that you canned yourself!?)
  • Fermented vegetables
  • Baby formula if needed
  • Pet food as needed

Every Day Pantry

  • Quinoa
  • Rice
  • Coconut milk
  • Beans (chickpeas, canneli beans, black beans, etc.)
  • Nuts (almonds, pine nuts, cashews, etc.)
  • Spices (Bay leaves, sage, curry, cumin, smoked paprika,cinnamon etc.)
  • Honey (local!)
  • Dried fruits (Raisins at minimum)
  • Dried oats
  • Tamari
  • Coconut oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Peanut/almond/cashew butter
  • Sea salt, fresh ground pepper
  • Sun dried tomatoes
  • Aged balsamic vinegar
  • Apple cider vinegar

Pantry Fun

  • Nutritional yeast
  • Wakame
  • Chia seeds
  • Umeboshi paste
  • Tahini
  • Rice vinegar
  • Fish sauce
  • Banana ketchup
  • Sirracha
